Database Management Basics

Database management is a system to manage information that is essential to an organization’s business operations. It involves storing data, disseminating it to users and applications and editing it when needed and monitoring changes to data and stopping data corruption due unexpected failure. It is an integral part of the overall informational infrastructure of a company that aids in decision-making as well as corporate growth and compliance with laws such as the GDPR and California Consumer Privacy Act.

In the 1960s, Charles Bachman and IBM among others developed the first database systems. They developed into information management systems (IMS) which allowed massive amounts of data to be stored and retrieved for a range of reasons. From calculating inventory, to supporting complicated financial accounting functions, and human resource functions.

A database consists of tables that organize data according to a certain scheme, such as one-to-many relationships. It uses primary keys to identify records and allow cross-references between tables. Each table contains a number of fields, also known as attributes, which provide information about the entities that comprise the data. The most widely used kind of database is a relational model designed by E. F. «Ted» Codd at IBM in the 1970s. This design is based on normalizing data to make it easier to use. It also makes it easier to update data, avoiding the need to modify several databases.

The majority of DBMSs support a variety of databases by providing different internal and external levels of organization. The internal level is focused on cost, scalability, and other operational issues like the physical layout of the database. The external level determines how the database appears in user interfaces and other applications. It can include a mixture of different external views that are based on different data models. It also may also include virtual tables that are calculated with generic data to enhance the performance.
